5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant, heartbreaking, hopeful 22 May 2014
By Mary Catherine Ferguson - Published on Amazon.com

When Alyssa’s mother gets sick, she is abandoned by her friends and family and has to care for her dying mother alone. No teenager should have to bear this burden, but many in the world do, and Alyssa is just like them: completely alone in a world full of people who are also alone. When her mother passes away, she feels like there is no hope left in the world for her. At the funeral, though, she meets Dalton, a boy who gives her hope that life can be worth living again. Love is not so simple, though, and Alyssa has to learn that part of loving is learning to cope with loss. Just as she begins to feel that she can rely on her romance with Dalton, they make a devastating discovery that changes everything. This young adult novel brings up feelings that many teenagers have to cope with, and has intelligence and poignant insight that will move adult readers as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A young romance with a bit of mystery 27 May 2014
By LaughingSun - Published on Amazon.com

Alyssa and Dalton by Laurel Veil is a young romance with a bit of mystery and intrigue thrown in with a good balance.

The main character Alyssa has been through a lot. Her father died in a car accident only a few months past, her sister ran away shortly after and her mother is dieing of cancer. She struggles to run a household and care for her Mom all on her own while trying to finish high school.

She is caught off guard one day in the forest behind her house while looking for a small Christmas tree for her Moms room. When she realizes she's being watched by two boys she runs towards home terrified, but a stray dog comes to her rescue and growls at the boys scaring them away. She takes the dog in and names him Thor because he was so brave and strong.

The romance between Alyssa and Dalton starts as a subtle friendship and keeps the reader wondering what's going to happen next between the two.

This novel kept me intrigued and always guessing. The ending was pleasantly unexpected and has left me wanting more. I'm hoping to be able to read more about the two young friends. I highly recommend this light read to anybody who enjoys a bit of mystery thrown in with a subtle love story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming tale 24 May 2014
By Scott - Published on Amazon.com

Alyssa & Dalton by Laurel Veil is a heartwarming young adult romance novel with a heap load of family drama. Alyssa is a senior in high school who has had her share of devastation. First her father dies in a tragic car accident; then her sister, unable to cope with the loss, runs away and finally, when we enter the story, her mother is dying of cancer. When her mother dies she meets Dalton at the funeral when he volunteers to be a pallbearer. Dalton’s home life isn’t great either. His father left when he was young and his mother is abusive because she blames him for it.

This story is clearly geared towards teens, but will tug at the heart strings of people of any age. Watching as Alyssa and Dalton’s relationship evolves will make you smile and cry. A wonderful story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching 24 May 2014

Alyssa is a senior in high school who has gone through much heart ache in her short life. Her father died in a car accident a few years ago, her sister ran away when she couldn’t cope with the grief, and her mother is dying of stage 4 breast cancer. Dalton is in College and comes from an abusive home. When Alyssa’s mother succumbs to her cancer Dalton volunteers to act as a pallbearer. They meet and hit it off almost instantaneously.

Alyssa & Dalton by Laurel Veil is a heartfelt Young Adult novel that shows the benefits of having people care for you, especially during hard times. When you read about Alyssa’s and Dalton’s struggles and how they help one another your heart will melt. This novel makes for a great afternoon read that I am sure you will enjoy.
4.0 out of 5 stars Alyssa and Dalton: romance/mystery 8 August 2014

So Alyssa is taking care of her cancerous, dying mother in her last days while trying to get things together for school, earn money, work around the house, etc. Her friends have ditched her now that she no longer lives in a nice house since her father's death, and she closes herself from making the same mistakes. She feels pretty alone, with no friends and her mother's death and her sister deserting her. But then a dog (named Thor) shows up, followed by a guy named Dalton who wants to stalk her because he feels... drawn to her for some reason? I think one part of the book that kinda seemed weird to me was that he wasn't very considerate of her mother's death. I mean, his thoughts are all about hitting on her and not giving up on her yet, and not really about her feelings. That's for the most part of their first interactions. I'll say that threw me off a bit (which is the reason for my 4 stars, and other people may not think this so important), but it wasn't too off-putting.

The rest of the book is a romance/mystery, with Dalton and Alyssa struggling through her home, as well as them helping each other with their lives and possibly combining them? I'd love another book with these guys, maybe just to check up on them? :) Loved the book!
