The AHA 10% in this product is high for those who are not used to it and who may have sensitive or fair skin. It also has the potential to increase sensitivity to the sun. Although there are those who are sensitive or allergic to hydroquinone itself, I believe the AHA's may be the culprit in a lot of the burning reported by some users. I'm fair skinned and freckled and plan to start very slowly to allow my skin to adjust to this product. Will probably start out using it every other night and cut back if irritation develops to every 3rd night until my skin gets accustomed to it. It will take a lot longer but this is the way to avoid serious irritation. I also plan to up my SPF protection when leaving the house.
One other thing many may be unaware of is people who are allergic to sulfites may also react to hydroquinone. Sulfites are strictly limited in processed foods now to a level not likely to cause reactions but some medications, mostly injectables, do still contain a small amount as preservatives. Most people living now would not be aware if they have this allergy and might have a cross reaction to this product.
I'll be reviewing the product periodically once I start using it-I know the results will likely take a while to show up. I hope this helps clear up some confusion and leads to safer use of this product.
I promised to give a further review, so here it is: I have been using this product twice daily for two months now. I am half way through my second tube. I am pleased to say that this product is working so well for me. The two largest spots on my face which I named archipelago and figure-eight because this is exactly what they looked like; have faded so much that I can now see my face, where before I did not see 'the forest for the trees' - meaning when I looked at myself in a mirror all I saw were archipelago and figure-eight. Although they have not quite gone - they are like ghostly remnants and the smaller ones have gone. I have stopped using concealers and foundation, because I am so happy with the results. My skin texture has gone through an unremarkable change as well, more like the covered skin under my shirt, soft and glowing. I now go bare with just my sunscreen on my face and use the product only at night now. I will continue to use this product until archipelago and figure-eight have totally disappeared. For those who experienced a redness in the spot area in the beginning, I experienced the same but persevered and the redness eventually faded. I do recommend this product.
