Picked this up during the Amazon’s sale event for the discounted price of 9.5K - which in my option was a great price to pay. I bought this as a birthday present for my wife who happens to be an avid reader. Of course the plan was to get her to move to digital books on the kindle as against buying more physical books, for which we do not have space left at home. For someone who has been hooked onto books since childhood, replacing an actual book with a display screen is somewhat of a departure. I was afraid that she may not accept or subscribe to the very notion of ebooks. Did my plan work?
Well - to some extent. An e-Book reader can never replace the sentiment associated with a physical book or the sensation of holding a book in your hands & taking a trip back memory lane as you flip through the yellowish pages. But it does reduce to need to keep buying more books.
It has taken some getting used to. And after spending a few hours on it, she seems to have embraced the idea of a display for a book. She still craves for an actual book every now & then. But she does find the Kindle useful to say the least. That my friends - in my books - is a step in the right direction.
In the last month or so - we have saved a significant amount of money since kindle books do cost less. Even for things like PMP certification courses - the kindle version cost way lesser. In my opinion for avid readers who buy a few books every month, they can recover the cost of the kindle over 1.5 - 2 years. So not a bad investment.
Moving on to the actual device, the screen is fantastic - crisp, clear, and very legible at night. What I do appreciate is that the device can be shared between family members & it creates a separate space which keeps track of book progress, pages, words or look-ups for individuals. Helps keep my stuff separate from my wife’s.
Also - the 8GB is sufficient to carry a whole host of books running in thousands. Another excellent feature is the IP rating which means we can use it around the pool or even if it happens to drizzle a bit. Certainly very helpful & peace of mind for an expensive piece of tech.
While having a body cover does help - I do feel the device is well built & the back has a rubber coating which makes it easy to grip. The screen does not scratch easily either. That said - if you want to throw it into a bag with other stuff (as my wife does) - it is best to keep it in a full case.
Overall the touch is surprisingly good. And the contrast of the display is solid. Easy on the eyes & gets close to reading a book - but falls short. I mean - it is always going to be an alternative. But I would prefer to travel light any day. Device certainly holds up to its promise. I do miss the physical buttons for the page flips -but I understand why Amazon decided to lose those, it helps with the waterproofing.
Some of the pitfalls:
1. The USB port is not type C for one & its feels cheap.
2. Battery life is nowhere as good as the last gen kindle. This would last a week or 1.5 weeks. Not bad certainly - but I miss the battery backup of the last Gen.
Other than those 2 - nothing else to complain about. Book selection on Amazon Kindle is great & the wifi makes it easy to download books on the go - even at airports & hotels.
I am yet to try out support for Audio Books via Audible which this device does support but so does your phone - so not sure why I would use it on the Kindle. Light is certainly useful & enhances the overal reading experience.
