Ahmedabad: City with a Past is a beautiful little book filled with history, culture, architectural heritage and nostalgia. Esther David reminisces about her childhood and growing up years traveling through the "gallies" and "pols" in and around the walled city along with the houses that were her homes for long durations until circumstances made her part with them. She intricately describes the homes and their décor, neighborhood, daily rituals of her family, the markets and the old city of Ahemadabad where she grew up.
The book beautifully captures the stories that give the city it's identity and respect from its contribution a capital city and a political base for rulers that have played their part in Indian history, the delectable cuisines and eating habits of Ahemadabadis from the traditional fare to the fusion food the city has accepted, the slow but eventual acceptance of fashion in attire, ancestoral homes and new condominiums, educational exposure, skills and crafts displayed by the city inhabitants and the city's acceptance of languages apart from Gujarati.
Its the western modernism that has helped the city progress diluting the warmth of community living in many parts of the city which the author writes about emotionally. Yet no matter how modern or rich the dwellers are they traditional and revere their heritage be it through festivals, rituals and religious gatherings.
A city that's safe for women and is also nature loving the author describes every trivial and great happening be it the city's auto-rickshaw drivers and their temperaments or the rights and earthquakes that change the equation of Ahemadabad's smooth functioning the reader has it all.
I have loved this part personal- part historical book, it works best as a cosy read for a rainy day or while on the go!The gorgeous illustrations just add to its beauty!😍You must read this account that blends the past with the present with a feeling of belongingness and fondness.

A biography of Ahmedabad from a winner of the Sahitya Akademi award There are many legends around the founding of Ahmedabad. One has it that some time in 1411 AD, a dog was looking for easy prey on the banks of the Sabarmati when a hare attacked him and drove him away. Sultan Ahmed Shah witnessed the scene and, impressed by the hare's spirit, decided to build a city right there. Now, six hundred years later, Ahmedabad is a city at the intersection of the old and the new. Centuries-old dargahs and havelis stand alongside high-rises and glitzy shopping malls. Once known for its textile mills, it is now one of the world's fastest developing cities. But while the fortifications of the walled city crumbled long ago, divisions between its varied groups have come to the fore, pulling them apart.Esther David, a member of Ahmedabad's small Bene Israel Jewish community, is a storehouse of city stories. In Ahmedabad: City with a Past, she takes the reader on an intimate rickshaw ride through a city full of life and wondrous contradictions.

Its a light 1 day read that focuses mainly on the old city of Ahmedabad. There are a lot of pictures/art in the text, and its narrative is autobiographical. In all honesty I felt it contained too many drawings/artwork. and missed one of the most important thing which could replace the overuse of choppy artwork, MAPS. would love to see an approximation of which region is the author talking about (she brings up a lot of key places) Situating them directionally, and on a map would make this book a lot more better.

The copy i received doesn't seem to be an original print. The paper and print quality are very poor and cover had a very prominent crease. Poor handling. This happened successively the 2nd time recently on Amazon. Very disappointed.

For a behind the scenes look at Ahmedabad, read Esther David’s book. Her amazing penned illustrations in black and white are worth the price of the book, too.
