Product Description

He’s an agent for hire.

She’s a small town sweetheart.

What could they possibly have in common… except danger?

Raised in the art of warfare, Former Navy SEAL Tristan Jacobs has always been a force to reckon with. Now that D.I.R.E. has successfully implemented his scientific enhancements, he’s a walking weapon. Unstoppable, as long as he stays focused.

When ex-BUD/S teammate Aidan Monroe interrupts his long-awaited sabbatical to call in a favor, Tristan reluctantly fills the simple request: take out his sister’s fiancé.

One problem: Rachel Monroe – smokin’ hot, kind-hearted, and in desperate need of a protector. After a night of mind-blowing passion, Tristan’s afraid unstoppable is just a memory. Knowing Aidan’s temper, Tristan could be, too.

Rachel Monroe had a plan to help her mother. Her brother ruined everything when his gorgeous, super-agent friend teleported her to his island getaway – and his bed. She’s drawn to him despite the fact he’s a professional agent, much like the people suspected of killing her father.

Now, his enemies have come to her small town, looking for vengeance. Have they found more than they bargained for? Or, does the past have its own retribution in mind?

About the Author

By day, Joni Hahn keeps her secret decoder ring hidden while she works as a mild-mannered contemporary romance author. She believes the world can never have too many superheroes, and anxiously waits for the call when one will need help saving the world... or getting into his costume. Joni was born with a hopelessly tender heart and believes there is nothing on earth more exhilarating than falling in love. A native Texan, she thinks cowboys are the epitome of masculinity, and that country music is the other soul music. Joni is a member of The Authors Guild, the Romance Writers of America and its Published Authors Network. She is a member of several RWA sub-chapters and has served in numerous board positions with the San Antonio Romance Authors. When she isn't writing, she enjoys reading, going to movies and concerts, and spending time with family and friends. Books 1 through 6.5 in Joni's sci fi romantic suspense series, The D.I.R.E. Agency, are available now. Look for the epic series finale, Book 7, Agent U7: Keegan in spring 2016!

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful way to start a series. I really enjoyed this 14 August 2015

I thought this was an interesting read I can’t say anything really grabbed me and held on. I was expecting more action but feel this was more of a book to setup with D.I.R.E is and does with showing you the basics of the operation. At the end of this audio they author does give you the first chapter or so of book two which starts out with action and a laugh. I am looking forward to listening to it and seeing if it picks up a little more. With that said I did find this to be a good read with some wild passion scenes. The plot is wonderful as Tristan takes on the bad guys and keeping his friends sister from marrying into that family as he keeps her safe. Things never goes as planned as Tristan and his friends find out, things get out of control easy and early finding Tristan in a mess of trouble not only from his friend but the lady he is protecting along with his heart.

Tristan as a character is one hot little number who loves them and leaves them. With his job he really cannot do relationships. Besides there isn’t a women who can keep his attention for long, that is until Rachel who turns his world upside down walks in his life. He really cannot get involved with this woman for a number of reasons at least that is what he tells his self. What he finds out is he is in way over his head as he makes sure her ex stays an ex which keeps his hands full, let’s not even talk about what she does to him. I really liked him because no matter what the job gets done. He will protect with his dying breath, he thinks he really isn’t good enough for Rachel beside his job just would not work with a relationship. He tries his best to talk his self out of it, the pull is to strong he gives in to the demand of his body. Oh what a night like no other it really is going to be hard to walk away from this woman. That is if her brother doesn’t kill him first…..

Rachel is doing what she needs to do to help pay off her father’s bills. If she marries her soon to be husband he will pay them all off. She isn’t really in love but is willing to do anything to help her family. With showing up at the wedding with no groom in site has her rethinking this. Once the groom shows up pasted out well this is just to much and is not going to happen. Then comes along her brother and his friend he tells her to hold on and not let go. OMG where are they and how did they get there. With her whole world turned upside down not knowing where to turn and what to do has her spinning. It just so happens that Tristan has a few things to say as well as show her. Will one night of hot passion lead to more or when she finds out more than she wants to know will she walk away?

I thought Fred Filbrich brought a lot to this audio his voice was clear and smooth, if there was any editing done I could not tell. The audio was clear with no noise of any kind. I thought his voices were great I had no trouble telling who was talking along with being able to tell if it was male or female. His tones were even whether excited or mad he hit them right on the mark. I have not listened to any audios by him and was very pleased with the outcome.

The author throws in a lot of twist that you do not see coming. I just am not sure why the mother was pushing her to marry the person she was. I got a little confused there but it might have been I wasn’t listening as well as I should have. I was setting in a dentist chair having a tooth pulled I am going with I most likely missed something that the author had written. I will stand by my thoughts of I didn’t care to much for her mother. I did like most of the characters each bring so much to the story even those you won’t like adds so much to the listen. I would have liked to have seen more action but as again I think this was more of a build up for the series. I really thought this was a wonderful thought out plot with bring Enhancements of Teleportation and Invisibility into a story that is believable. The author throws in some hot romance for your pleasure which will steam up your e reader. The characters are believable and ones you can relate to with normal issues for the most part. This is a book I want to listen to again when I can really listen to it and give it my full attention. There is a lot of drama with many surprises that will keep you on your toes. A few things that are sure to blow your mind with mother dear reveals a few secretes of many years ago. This was well worth the listen and it will be one I will be going back to revisit soon. This is one author to keep your eyes on with well over 100 five and four star reviews I would say she is one to check out and give a read.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK 5 February 2014

Here's the perfect way to describe the forgetableness of this book. Last night I finished a book and went to bed, with the intention of reviewing it this morning. This morning, I took my Kindle to the gym and started this book while on the stationary bike. When I got home, I reviewed the book I finished last-night and then sat down to look at my Kindle Collections to pick out what to read next, completely forgetting that I had started and read 30% of this book already. It made that little of an impression. When I finally remembered having already started it, I sat down to finish it up.

Now, don't misunderstand me. I'm not necessarily saying it was a bad book. I'm sure we've all read those books that we don't love, but we don't hate either. They're like cotton candy—a shot of sweetness that you can only savour for a moment and then leaves very little memory of itself. Yep, that's what this book was like.

Seeing the emotionless Tristan become attached to someone was nice. The fact that Rachel wasn't a complete pushover was appreciable. Her ultra-protective brother was fun. There were plenty of 'aww' moments and the sex was pretty mild.

However, quite a lot of the plot was just skimmed over or just plain unbelievable. For example, I'm still unsure why Aidan called Tristan to guard Rachel in the first place, other than that he disliked her fiancé. That seems a little extreme. As far as I can tell there was no actual risk to Rachel that Aidan would have been trying to protect her against.

There is also a lot of history between the older generation of characters that isn't explored. The science isn't well explained. And the romance is lightning fast. It isn't insta-love, but within a matter of a day or so Tristan and Rachel fall madly in love and are willing to essentially throw their established lives away to be together. It too seems a bit extreme.

For a quick, fluffy read, this is worth picking up. If you're looking for great literature....um, it probably won't fit the bill. It does actually end, though. Yes, that's right, no cliffhanger!
4.0 out of 5 stars A great read 5 December 2016

This book is perma free! It is a pretty steamy read with sci-fi aspects and lots of action. A trifecta of awesomeness for my tastes.

The brothers best friend romance’s are some of my favorite ones to read. I loved how strong willed and fiesty Rachel was. But she was also very self-sacrificing for her family and very inquisitive. An all around three dimentional character. The best kind!

And Tristan was the tall loner that never had as much to lose as Rachel with regards to a friendships and love. Her brother being the closest thing to family in his lonely life. And he has one of the coolest powers ever! What I felt was different about this book is usually the romance is the subplot but in this one the sci-fi seemed to be the subplot and it read differently because of it. In a real good way. It was very underplayed and his powers were very much made an extension of his other qualities, such as his SEAL training.

They were total opposites and boy did they attract! Their chemistry was very steamy and they had a hard time attempting to resist, which I thought was awesome. The back and forth banter between them was like foreplay. Great romance, opening the door for the supporting character’s books of their own. I love these kinds of series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Off the charts chemistry and excitement! 26 June 2016

I really really enjoyed book 1 in the "D.I.R.E" Agency series! The extra "embellishments" make each Agent so much more in character....not to mention hot! The women are no shrinking violets either and their kickass attitudes just make the attraction intense and the sexual chemistry off the charts! Looking forward to reading Book 2!
2.0 out of 5 stars Too melodramatic 10 January 2016

This book began with a creepy scene where our male main character uses his ability to cloak himself to watch the female main character – a woman he doesn’t even know and has not had an opportunity to consent – undress. It was gross and succeeded in giving me a bad feeling about Tristan from the start. He’s a super-talented mercenary, but apparently has never really seen a naked woman before – that’s how much Rachel’s body impresses him. Even his gallantry later, when he offers to let her sleep in his Nickleback t-shirt, doesn’t cover for his original creepy factor.

Tristan works for the D.I.R.E. Agency, a poorly defined collection of super-commandos who supposedly fight international crime (but really seem to be a well-funded excuse for the boss to carry on a grudge match with his old Army-buddy-turned-super-criminal). Old romantic rivalries are involved – it’s a melodramatic and fluffy mess. Anyway, as an agent, Tristan has been outfitted with an implant that allows him to go invisible and teleport. This is pretty fancy technology and there is no real explanation as to why the D.I.R.E. Agency is the only group with access to it. Rachel, the woman he uses his invisibility to spy on, is the sister of one of his teammates. She is preparing to marry a man that she doesn’t love so that she can pay off her deceased father’s medical bills. Given that Tristan makes enough to own a private island, there is no explanation as to why Rachel’s brother – Tristan’s co-worker – makes so little that his sister must basically prostitute herself in order to pay bills. I guess D.I.R.E. has radically different pay scales for different operatives? Whatever the ultimate explanation, Tristan immediately falls for Rachel.

There is a lot of action in this book. This is good because it helps distract the reader from how incoherent the plot really is. Everyone knows everybody else and it’s very “high drama” in an 80s evening soap opera sense. I kept picturing a camera swiveling to a character’s face for a close-up after another dramatic revelation about the past was made. Too much of the plot hinges on coincidence. It can be hard to get the first book of a series off the ground, so maybe subsequent installments will be less melodramatic, but – given the set-up we already have for the second book – I doubt it.
