Dr. Rihaan Mehta is a second generation American Indian. He is a neurosurgeon who is completely dedicated to his work and has no time or inclination for love or marriage. But Rihaan’s mother, like most Indian mothers, has plans and dreams for his marriage. She even has some ‘appropriate’ proposals ready at hand for him. When she finally entraps Rihaan to agree to get married, Rihaan puts up a condition that he would be the one to choose his future wife. After some thoughts and research, Rihaan finds Deepika online and gets married to her in a rushed ceremony in India. But on his wedding night, he has a surprise waiting for him in form of Naina…

Rihaan comes across as this typical workaholic in the beginning whose requirements in a bride seems almost offensive – he doesn’t want a life partner as such, he could do with a robot. Fate has something for him in store that changes his life forever. Naina on the other hand feels a bit naïve in the beginning but slowly her character unfolds and grows so much that one cannot help but like her. These two people are poles apart, yet brought together by a cruel joke. From strangers to friends to lovers to strangers again, Rihaan and Naina take a journey of a lifetime, where they not only discover each other but also discover hidden parts of themselves.

The plot seems simple and straightforward in the beginning, but then the author introduces certain twists in the novel that elevates it to a higher level than just a romance or just a simple chic-lit. I felt that the beginning was a bit rushed, specially the part with Deepika and I would have loved to have seen more of their online matrimonial site courtship. Once Naina is introduced, the pace settles down to a leisurely one.

Writer Simi K. Rao has again written an wonderful story ‘The accidental Wife’ which is totally different from her debut and previous novel ‘An Incurable Insanity/Inconvenient Relations- book 1’. The Accidental wife is the story of a neurosurgeon Rihaan and Naina, who has a doctorate degree in English literature and does wonder with her camera. Rihaan was allergic to the idea of getting married and wanted to remain bachelor for all his life. Though his mother managed to make him fall in her trap, Rihaan was determined to make no compromises and enjoy his freedom forever. Finally deciding to get married, the ‘Dimaag ka Doctor’ made use of his ‘dimaag’ and went on choosing his bride in the matrimonial site and arranged his marriage, which was more like a deal than a marriage. But the Almighty had already planned everything and He had his own way, that is how Rihaan accidentally ended up tying the knot with Naina, his ‘accidental wife’. For Naina, love is union of two hearts, so is the marriage; while for Rihaan it is just a biological thing..such was the difference between their perspective of love. On their wedding night they parted their ways only to meet again. Naina, who thought she was favouring her friend, realized she did wrong to Rihaan and so decided to help him and act like a true couple for his family. And then a new chapter was started in their lives, a bitter sweet journey which has the process of falling in love , trying hard to resist it, reluctance to accept it leading to frustration, separation, then realization of love, persuasion, apologizing – forgiving…and finally the magical night of giving way to love. But what happened next changed their lives. Well, no more spoiler..You need to find out that on your own. So go, get a copy and read on.Read more ›

The Accidental Wife had me hooked right from its title to the blurb. I was intrigued and knew I had to read the book. The cover is also good but it is the blurb that catches your attention.

Being the first book by the author that I have read, I had no preconceived notions and expectations from her and so, was surprised when I started loving the story right from the start. The prologue is beautifully arranged to give the reader an initial jolt and raise his interest level which only keeps increasing as the story unfolds.

Simi's writing style is balanced, engaging and I could see that she had done her research when talking about the medical procedures, the lifestyle of Indian doctors working abroad and the lives of NRI Indians in a foreign land. With the usual spicy ingredients of an overbearing and over dramatic mother to the seemingly henpecked and cool father to a protective and understanding sibling to the harassed and desperately-trying-to-save-his-independence, hero; everything was sketched admirably.

Initially, I could not fully connect with the reasons given by the heroine for her actions by which she became The Accidental Wife and I thought "How can such an intelligent woman be such a fool?" but then later, I stopped caring because I was more engrossed in the intense romance and emotions developing between the protagonists.

What started out as a predictable read soon became a totally unexpected story that had me hooked and glued to my seat all through. I kept rooting for these two and praying that nothing happened to stop their happily-ever-after.

An intense, emotionally engaging and a solid story, I absolutely loved The Accidental Wife by Simi K. Rao and give it 4.5 out of 5.
