3.0 out of 5 stars Read CAREFULLY before you buy! 10 November 2015

When you purchase this item, pay attention to the item you select. The iPhone 5S has a fingerprint screen button. If you put a 5S into an iPhone 5 case, the fingerprint function will not work, even though the case will fit. You need to pay attention to the PICTURE of the item you want to buy, not any of the text. If the picture of the case you want displays a rubber button over the screen button, it is for an iPhone 5 and your iPhone 5S fingerprint sensor will not work. Both iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S cases are being sold by this vendor but they are different and the buyer needs to pay attention to which one they buy. This is the reason for all the mixed reviews!

I am returning my iPhone 5 case (because I did not pay attention to the pictures) to buy an iPhone 5S case….

4.0 out of 5 stars OtterBox Defender for iPhone SE? Same as 5/5s? 4 April 2016

Ordered the Otterbox Defender for the new iPhone SE. Have had Defenders for other phones and have never had a problem with the screen protector bubbling up. However, the screen protector on this one has bubbles in about a 1" x 2" area in the middle of the screen.... so pretty much the entire middle area of the screen. Took it apart, cleaned it... and put it back together again multiple times hoping this would help... it did not. They say the fitment for the iPhone SE is the exact same as the iPhone 5/5s. After this issue... I'm not so sure. Either I received a defective product or the fitment isn't the same. Going to try the Defender for the SE one more time. It is does the same thing... the fitment is the problem.

4/5/16 Update: My first case was sold by 'Joa Online' and I have determined was clearly a defective unit... (or possibly a fake). The texture on the outside case was completely different on the first case than the replacement. The replacement case (shipped from 'Amazon.com LLC') fits the iPhone SE tighter and there are no bubbles on the case screen protector. I have changed my rating from 1 star to 4 stars for this reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars! 8 January 2015

This thing literally saved my phone. I was in a hurry one day and stupidly put my phone in the pouch on my hoodie. I was rushing to get my kids in their car seats and didn't notice it slide out. I get in and back out and feel a bump. At this time my daughter asks me to play the radio on my phone. I go to grab for it only to realize it's not there in my hoodie. I almost tore up my purse and car looking for it and then it hit me that I had run over it (with a Dodge Neon). I'm thinking to myself "great, I've ruined my new phone. I don't need this right now". I went back to the driveway and sure enough I saw the pink case. I went over and looked at and there was hardly any damage at all. The phone was completely unscathed and the case itself had almost no damage. I am including photos of what it looked like after I took my phone out. I don't have another camera to take photos with besides my phone (so get over it). You can't tell at all until it is flipped on it's side. I was so relieved to find I hadn't ruined my phone by being stupid and in a hurry. I am very impressed and will be a customer for life!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good case design but not perfect with room for improvement! 2 November 2013
By JJCEO - Published on Amazon.com
I have used Otterbox cases for years for my iPhones and my iPad 2 and 3 tablets. They are about the best protection you can get for an iPhone if you can take the added size and weight that the case adds to the phone. I have a new iPhone 5S and I have used several cases while waiting for this case to arrive. I frankly have been afraid that I was going to drop my phone and beak it using these other cases. I actually came close to dropping it on concrete twice! This is the new case that is a combo case for the iPhone 5 and 5S. This color combination is called Surf.

Inside of the box you will find the belt clip on holster that also acts as a phone stand that allows you to set the phone up to watch videos. The phone can snap into the holster face in for added protection or face out for your ability to use the phone or to watch videos. One side of the holster has two curved corners that protect the edges of the case from falling and the top has a snap on latch that locks the case into position in the holster. The back of the holster has a rotating clip that allows the holster to spin 360 degrees and you can wear the holster at any angle that is comfortable but I recommend that the extended corners stay down for added security if possible. The clip can also be locked open to be used as a stand and twisting the clip allows you to set the angle at which your phone will stand up.

The case is a clam shell polycarbonate shell that fits into the silicone outer case. The inner case has foam on the inside back cover to protect your phone from shock, vibration and scratches and the inner clamshell locks around your phone to protect it. The outer case is a high density silicone that adds protection against drops and bumps. The ports are covered with flaps that are tight and designed to lock into place. They are designed to minimize the ingress of moisture or dust into the critical switches and ports. The phone front screen has a cover that covers all of it except the home button because of the fingerprint sensor. The edge of the case is high around the front of the phone and you can get the fingerprint sensor to work but because of the new higher angle of your finger's approach you may want to rememorize your finger prints. All of the controls are accessible and the dual cameras and flash are uncovered to allow you to still take good photos and videos. In the video I assemble the case and show the details of its strengths and weaknesses.

Overall it is a nice case but not perfect. I actually think the holster is a weaker design than the one for the iPhone 4 and I show why in my video. I hate seeing someone trying to save pennies of plastic and making the holster look and feel weaker. This is not an inexpensive case and when you pay this kind of money for a phone case it should maintain high quality standards. In addition there is a front bottom piece of silicone below the home button that for lack of better words is just weak. If you are the type of person that does not use the holster and puts the case into your pants pocket or purse then I am sure that you will not like this thin strap. I show it in my video and it will easily get stretched and pulled out of shape. Some people may even break it in time.

Due to the cheaper design of the holster and the thin strip of silicone on the front bottom I rate this case as a 4 star. The case holster could have easily been made as robust as the one for the iPhone 4 which in my instance is still like new after several years of daily use.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE OF COUNTERFEITS 1 February 2013
By Grace Clark - Published on Amazon.com

I adore my OtterBox defender case. I previously had one for the iPhone 4s which was nice but obviously bulky. When I upgraded to the 5 I decided to go with something slimmer - a speck case - but I was so nervous about harming my new device. After three weeks I knew I had to go back to the company I trusted for optimal protection, and I was so happy to find that the defender for the iPhone 5 is much slimmer and appealing than the old 4s versions. I still get the protection I require without sacrificing aesthetics. I love the way my phone looks and feels. I actually prefer how the phone fits in my hand when it's in this case than when it's bare. It still fits and slides into my pocket just fine, and it just seems so much sturdier. I've had several drops in the few weeks I've had it and there has been no damage to the phone whatsoever. I even dropped it while on the elliptical - it fell and bounced on the edge of one of the foot pieces, flying across the gym! No problem! I did remove the build in screen protector in favor of the Zagg shield. Together it's just perfect.

But a cautionary tale -- I came on Amazon and purchased a case from a third party seller - "cellphonegeeks" out of Idaho but I think they operate under many different profiles - and was extremely pleased to find that I could pay less than half of what retail stores and OtterBox itself charges for the cases. What a deal, I thought. Wrong. I received an obviously counterfeit product that was undeniably fake and of such poor quality. I have posted images comparing the fraud to the authentic product I ended up purchasing from a big box retailer. Luckily I was able to have a refund of the product and I'm now living happily with a real OtterBox. My suggestion is to buy straight from Amazon itself or wait for the item to go on sale at one of the major retailers. I purchased mine from Radio Shack for about five dollars less than MSRP. It's worth it to pay the real price!
