I have previously read and enjoyed the works by this author. Arjuna, Kamadeva and Shakti have all been retellings of stories that we have heard before but with her own twist. And it has worked well for the author. Yama’s Lieutenant is however a fantasy fiction with which the author has given her writing a new direction.

Agni Prakash, our protagonist, is naturally a suave personality but comes with some baggage. The loss of his twin sister has changed his world and his life completely. When he is approached to become Yama’s lieutenant and help him avert certain annihilation that awaits both hell and earth. You see, the populace of the hells that Yama reigns over have escaped and their plans will bring nothing but mayhem. Armed with wit, charm and a manuscript left behind by his sister, Agni is ready to face whatever it takes. But is one human enough? Will he succeed or will he perish in the face of the pure evil that is now on the loose?

One thing that I have come to expect from Anuja Chandramouli is quality in language. Over the last three books she has grown a lot and this time too she has delivered on my expectations. The story telling style and the different narratives within the story have delivered on all my expectations from this author. Her style is certainly enchanting. The plot itself feels a little inspired by our mythology, yet has its own unique flavor. It is an interesting premise which is not very complicated and I kind of expected the ending, yet the pages just flew by. The one thing I would like to point out here is that I wished for more depth and allure from our protagonist. Agni is supposedly this charismatic personality yet at times he felt too simple and his personality didn’t really come through or speak to me.

The Author apparently is well versed in mythology and toys with the story of Yama, blends it with imagination, intertwined with noodles and chocolates and weaves out a fiction ideal for the younger generation. She takes in her stride the rulers and demons of all the three worlds whom Agni (Yama’s lieutenant) meets, in his mission to redeem Yama’s consort from the Goddess Ganga. Agni is accompanied by a Kanya whose story reveals that the once sacred Sivagami Math was a factory brewing demons. The author while strolling down deep dark corridors, shows the horror and agony of the sufferers in hell and how it functioned, and reveals that the worst offenders were exempt from punishment as a reward for their perversion , debauchery and other crimes and those seeking salvation to cleanse their souls were taken to task. The description of how Chaya felt when her husband (Surya) made love to her and the reason for Yami to reject Svana’s marriage proposal would leave the reader flabbergasted. The description of the Ganges both in its pure and contaminated form, leaves us to realize, what it ought to be and what it is.. The manner in which Minothi wins over in getting Nitara from Goddess Ganga is touching after Agni was rebuked that his speech was worthy of a parrot and twice as irritating. Minothi says” the dye has been cast and none has any choice in the matter and you know it all despite being reluctant to accept its inevitability”.Read more ›

She has managed to leave me enthralled! I thought Shakti was her most wonderful work till date but now I feel Yama is. Writing about death and that too in such a fashion is exemplary. She managed to mix mythology with fantasy fiction to derive a heady concoction which will leave you on the edge of your seat till the last word.

Don't MISS this one! She has outdone herself in this work.

Yama's Lieutenant WOW, i mean wowwwww. The journey of a mortal christened as yama's lieutenant is fantabulous from the start till the finish. The writing is crisp, funny, philosophical even and pushes forward at such a furious pace that by the end of it all, this reader was left wanting more. The parallel storytelling by the author works brilliantly as its just a marvellous piece of fiction which will go down as the first of its kind (That i know of). Anuja chandramouli, the renowned mythology author has slipped out of her comfort zone and given us a fantasy novel which is epic. The modern era in which the story is told adds so much to the story and the fact that it is imbibed in a healthy dose of hindu mythology adds to the wonderful experience of reading this bundle of joy. I do not want to spoil even a single bit of this story. This is a must read novel for book lovers everywhere not just in india, GO FOR IT :)
