About The Book

The Discovery of India was written by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The book, Discovery of India, was written by Nehru when he was imprisoned in 1942-1946 at Ahmednagar in the Ahmednagar fort. This book is a product of Nehru's four years of solitude time in prison and his love for the country. Being one of the most respected books in country coming from one of the most respected national leaders and freedom fighters, this book shows to the world the greatness of the nation India.

Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned for his participation in one of the freedom movements during the British Era of India-Quit India movement. Upon spending his time in jail for revolting against British government, Nehru decided to utilize his time in creating a book. The book speaks of the rich tradition, history, culture and philosophy of India, from the eyes of a patriotic Indian fighting for the country's freedom. in this book, Nehru argues that India is a historic nation and so it has every right to remain independent.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru attempts to study the history of India by starting from the Indus Valley Civilization. Nehru then moves on to cover the country's history from the arrival of Aryans till the rule of India by the British Empire. Jawaharlal Nehru says that India in the past was governed with peace and harmony prevailing and after the interruption of outside forces the society got corrupted. He also explains in depth about the philosophies of India.

Pouring his love and affection for the country and using his knowledge about its history, Nehru crafted an elegant collection of the values of his country. The edition is published in paperback, on 1st February, 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but a long read 4 April 2014
I'd say this book is good for someone who is in college. Needs the time and effort to read it as it is a long read (as well as intense at times). Nehru-ji impresses the reader with the breadth of his knowledge - both of India and the world. I wish at times he explained what those phrases in French meant ! He makes a compelling case of why the reader should be proud of India's culture and heritage. With ample examples, he brings that out very well. At times though, it feels repetitive to hear his arguments for how the British rule has spoiled the economy but he backs all those with facts. It is not jingoism when you express how superior the country is as long as the statements are scientific and fact-based. Talking of which, his penchant for scientific inquiry stuck me the most. I wish the countrymen (especially all politicians of his day) shared that.

Liked: his fact-based, scientific inquiry of India's history & his pride at being an India
Dislikes: some arguments repeated multiple times & the minor French references :)

Overall, worth reading.
