5.0 out of 5 stars [Updated] New amPen Stylus: Excellent with Kindle Fire, iPad and more 30 July 2012
By John Williamson - Published on Amazon.com
Colour: Black Verified Purchase
Here's a fine example of taking a first-rate product and making subtle improvements to make it truly excellent.

This amPen New hybrid stylus is an example of product evolution at its best, and the key to this new stylus is in its tip, as can be seen in the photos on this page. The engineers have taken an already very good soft rubber tip and replaced it with a conductive fiber/rubber hybrid tip, and the result is a stylus that offers a smoother action as you access the screen on a tablet, along with an increased level of sensitivity.

But please note: now there is a newer version, the amPen (TM) New Hybrid Stylus (Black), and this one is available in more colors, yet this newest version is marked as having a 'Replaceable Hybrid Tip' in the product description.

So what makes this amPen New Hybrid Stylus a good choice for tablet users?

+ Conductive fiber/rubber hybrid tip offers smoother responsiveness on the screen
+ Lightweight compact design; has a metal (not plastic) pen clip
+ Newest version has user-replaceable hybrid tips (more on this later)
+ Corded attachment piece plugs into the headphone jack; no lost stylus
+ Packaged in a simple box; there's no clamshell to have to cut open
+ Excellent pricing for a superb product

◆ In Use:

Skeptic that I am, had to put it through its paces, and thoroughly, trying it with many different scenarios on my Kindle Fire, trying it with many installed apps, using it to highlight passages in books, and during access to the Internet. The increased sensitivity was apparent, as was the smoothness during actions like highlighting text. Putting it simply I ended up being pleasantly surprised.

It's really hard to compare this with other stylus products, as it's slightly different in feel due to the conductive fiber/rubber hybrid tip vs. the soft rubber tips on the others that have become my standards. When I first bought my Kindle Fire, I tried to use it without a stylus, and after going through screen smudges and clumsy moves on my part, did some local looking at various stores and here on Amazon to see what was available, in a wide range of prices.

After going through a number of different products, I had ended up with two that I found to be better than most: the highly rated amCase (TM) amPen Ultra-sensitive Capacitive Stylus and the AmazonBasics Stylus, both of which I found to be a 5-star products that have not had tip failures over time like some of the others... and it happens.

But the bottom line is that this amPen New hybrid stylus sets a new standard in smoothness and overall functionality, and this stylus also has a metal pen clip. While many of us won't be putting it in a shirt pocket, it was easy to clip to the elastic band on my Marware Vibe Case Cover. This makes for a very convenient combination when mobile... and this combined with the attachment piece plug on the cord keeps the stylus from being misplaced.

It might be suggested that the hybrid tip of this or just about any other rubber tipped stylus will pick up skin oils or perspiration if you run your fingers on it. This might come from accidental touching it after rubbing your skin, but it can have an effect on performance, and will also streak your tablet screen. Should this happen, just lightly wipe the tip with a microfiber cloth like you might use for cleaning eyeglasses or the screen of your tablet device. I use the Nikon MicroKlear Microfiber Cleaning Cloth on the tip of this stylus to remove skin oils, but do it gently.

This stylus is excellent choice for users of the Kindle Fire, Kindle Touch or the iPad series based on personal use. The way that it slide it across the screen when highlighting text makes it the smoothest that I've experienced, so there must be something good to this conductive fiber/rubber hybrid tip technology. Looking at performance, feel, and real functionality and performance, this new stylus highly recommended, and thinking of the friends that I have who have had issues with various types of stylus products, I already know what they're getting as birthday gifts and such. Considering the excellent price in comparison with the better grade stylus products that I've used makes it an outstanding buy.

[UPDATE: 1/20/2013]

Since I posted this review, I've ordered a few of these as gift for friends, and last fall ordered another for use with my new Kindle Fire HD 8.9" device. My search for the "perfect stylus" has been put on hold, as this product has met all of my needs. Keep in mind, as in many things, my findings are subjective and based on the performance that I've had with these.

[UPDATE: 9/24/2013]

This review has been updated to note the newest version of this stylus, the amPen New Hybrid Stylus (Black) for iPad Air, iPad 2, iPad Mini, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5/5s/5c, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Galaxy S4, HTC One (Interchangeable Hybrid Tip Feature). This updated version is the one that I would recommend over the older models, as the tips are user replaceable as noted in the product specs. And note that the amPen New Hybrid Stylus Replacement Tip (5-Pack) is available as well, filling a need for which many have asked.

[UPDATE: 1/22/2014]

For those who prefer an longer stylus with a gel pen included, TechMatte recently released the new amPen Hybrid 3-in-1 Stylus in either black or silver. This new stylus is longer, at 5½-inches overall length, and also uses the interchangeable hybrid tip. But the best part of this new one is that it uses the the readily-available Pilot G2 gel ink refills, so that you can customize it to your own style. My new favorite, it's well worth a look.

◆ Summary:

Whether you pick the updated amPen New Hybrid Stylus in black or another color, or the newest model noted above, it will not disappoint. Just be sure that it's marked as having the 'Replaceable Hybrid Tip' before you click on the order button. These are excellent choices for users of tablets and smartphones alike, and the way that they slide across the screen makes them the smoothest that I've experienced, so there must be something good to this conductive fiber/rubber hybrid tip technology. Looking at performance, feel, and real functionality, these stylus products are highly recommended. Considering the excellent price in comparison with the better grade stylus products that I've used, these are an outstanding buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product... 10 September 2012
By Gabriel Vargas - Published on Amazon.com
Colour: Black Verified Purchase
After much review reading, I decided on this stylus to use with my iPad. The biggest selling features: the description mentioned that it was .07mm and that it was a fiber mesh tip. I didn't want a stylus that had a big "footprint" when I wrote with it and in reading other reviews it seemed like the rubber-tipped stylus' wore out and broke. Hence, the chose for this stylus.

I have used the product for a couple of weeks now. I just started using the stylus for taking notes and it works really well; I just have to remember not to press very hard; there is no need to. It glides very nicely on the screen and doesn't leave any marks. In addition, I do not have to press very hard or multiple times for the iPad to register the touch.

Fortunately, the description of .07mm was accurate. I am able to write and the writing is not any bigger than I would like (this may be attributable to the app I am using).

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because it seems to be just a bit short in length. My hands are not huge, but I would like just a bit more length to fit nicely.

Overall, great product!

5.0 out of 5 stars amPen New Hybrid Stylus: An updated product that works well 31 January 2013
By John Williamson - Published on Amazon.com
Colour: Silver Verified Purchase
Using a stylus with various devices can be highly subjective, but when you find one that works well for you, it's hard to do without it. This one is a good example of taking a first-rate product and making subtle improvements to make it truly excellent.

The amPen New Hybrid Stylus (Silver) is an example of product evolution at its best, and the key to this new stylus is in its tip, as can be seen in the photos on this page. It is identical to the amPen New Hybrid Stylus (Black) in all respects but the color of the barrel. The product engineers have taken an already very good soft rubber tip and re-engineered it with a conductive fiber/rubber hybrid tip, and the result is a stylus that offers a smoother action as you access the screen on a tablet, along with an increased level of sensitivity.

But please note: now there is a newer version, the amPen New Hybrid Stylus (Black), and this one is available in more colors, yet this newest version is marked as having a Replaceable Hybrid Tip. I've bought this newer version, and it's even better than the original version as you can now change the tips should they wear down with time.

So what makes this amPen New Hybrid Stylus a good choice?

+ Conductive fiber/rubber hybrid tip; offers smoother responsiveness on the screen
+ Newest version has user-replaceable hybrid tips; easy to replace
+ Convenient size; just under five-inches in overall length
+ Lightweight compact design; has a metal (not plastic) pen clip
+ Corded attachment piece plugs into the headphone jack; no lost stylus
+ Packaged in a simple box; there's no clamshell to have to cut open
+ Excellent pricing for a superb product

◆ In Use:

My original purchase had been the amPen New Hybrid Stylus (Black), and skeptic that I am, had thoroughly put it through its paces, trying it with many different scenarios on my Kindle Fire HD and Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone, trying it with many installed apps, using it to highlight passages in books, and during access to the Internet. The increased sensitivity was apparent, as was the smoothness during actions like highlighting text. Putting it simply, I ended up being pleasantly surprised.

Had recently picked up a Samsung Galaxy S III Android Phone, and quickly found that using a stylus with this smartphone would be a big help, so getting the original amPen New Hybrid Stylus made good sense, as did getting a separate color. As using the original with the Kindle Fire had proven to be so good, this new one paid off in functionality as well. And the sensitivity with this is excellent on the screen when needing to do fine details, as with text entry, photo editing, Web surfing and such.

It's really hard to compare these with other stylus products, as they're slightly different in feel due to the conductive fiber/rubber hybrid tip vs. the soft rubber tips on the others available here. When I first bought my 1st generation Kindle Fire, I tried to use it without a stylus, and after going through screen smudges and clumsy moves on my part, did some local looking at various stores and here on Amazon to see what was available, in a wide range of prices.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW - amPen New Hybrid Stylus, silver 1 March 2013
By Karen J. - Published on Amazon.com
Colour: Silver Verified Purchase
Recently, I've ordered 5 styli from Amazon. I've been using the Targus capacitive stylus and have been reasonably OK with it, but it was wearing out. Of the five good styli, I found this amPen hybrid to be the BEST. It only cost about half what the TruGlide hybrid cost, (I returned the TruGlide), yet this one is noticeably more sensitive. The TruGlide required more pressure to work, and often had trouble even scrolling a page for that reason, but the amPen hybrid worked with even a light touch, which just worked better for me.

For navigation, it's at least as responsive as the new Targus capacitive stylus, but without the drag. The amPen's tip selects even tiny items more accurately, another improvement over the Targus. It was also as responsive as the 2 Accessorise Slim Capacitive Styli, although if you're only interested in navigation, the Accessorise can be a low-cost alternative to both the Targus or amPen. The tip of the Accessorise is smaller, so it too can more easily select tiny items, but it feels a bit thin, so it's too soon to know if it will last, and handwriting with the amPen is definitely better.

I tested the amPen's handwriting on an ipad 3 with both the Notability and GoodNotes apps. The amPen glided smoothly and wrote easily, producing clear handwriting and no skips. It was silent and comfortable to write with, too, although I haven't yet wrote for hours on end, so I can't judge long-term writing comfort.

Overall, this is my all round favorite and go-to stylus, because of it's versatility in navigation and handwriting, as well as quiet comfort and affordable price. It even comes with a couple of stringed-attachments (1 with a lobster claw clip), so you can plug it into the earphone jack if you're prone to losing styli. For my needs at home, it's just fine sticking magnetically to the ipad. You also can choose between silver and black. I have the silver, which beautifully matches the white ipad.

The only thing I could wish for, since I use mine on a larger tablet, is to be a tad longer. I generally prefer a 5" MINIMUM length in styli, and this is 4-13/16". Different people use different electronics and prefer different lengths, so a versatile solution could be a cap with a clip, then it could safely travel in pocket or purse. Plus, when in use, the cap could go on the other end to add more length, if desired. If amPen sold a matching cap with a clip, I would buy it, or pay more for the stylus to have it included.

Anyway, the amPen hybrid is the most satisfactory stylus I've used so far. I understand the hybrids are supposed to last much longer than the standard rubber-tipped ones. If this proves untrue with longer use, I'll edit my review. In the meantime - heartily recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Silky, Smooth, Stylus 10 January 2015
By Jay M - Published on Amazon.com
Colour: Black Verified Purchase
If you are the type of person who prefers to use a stylus with your touch screen devices, look no further.

The amPen Hybrid Stylus is unique, and will give you a very comfortable experience. The stylus is 4 3/4" long and roughly the same width as an average rubber gripped pen. This length may be too short for some people, but it fits in my medium sized hands very comfortably. It has a nice feel in the hand too. It does not feel cheap at all, and has just the right amount of weight to it. It comes with two differently sized detachable lanyards that can connect to your devices headphone jack to keep it from getting lost. It has a metal pocket clip that is etched with the word "amPen" and feels very sturdy.

Now on to the star of the show, the tip.
It features a removable/replaceable rubber tip that has an excellent density to it; not too hard, not too soft. It is hard enough to articulate fine lines and to select small links or text, but soft enough to give your hand writing character for those people with pressure sensitive devices... And speaking of different types of devices, I have tried this stylus on every touch screen gadget in the house, and it has worked on all of them, from phones to tablets. Even those with screen protectors.

Here is what makes the amPen different from other stylus' and why you should purchase it though... The rubber tip is covered in a silver cloth-type material. This might not sound like much, but it really makes all the difference in the world. Normal stylus typically come in two types: rubber tipped and plastic tipped. The rubber tipped stylus' sometimes have the issue of having too much friction and "dragging" across the screen while swiping or handwriting... The plastic tipped ones solve this problem, but make an annoying click sound every time you tap the screen (definitely not ideal for typing)... The introduction of this cloth-type covering on the amPem stylus eliminates both of these issues.

Quiet tapping and typing, and silky smooth drawing/writing/swiping is what you will get with this stylus. And not to mention great customer care... I sent them an email with some questions and comments about the product, and they replied right away with a professional and friendly response.

There was only a couple things I could find wrong with this product, and both are very minor...
the first I mentioned above, that it may be too short for someone with larger hands... The second is that if you decide not to use the lanyard with it, you are left with a little metal ring at the top that can flop around and make a slight jingling noise which can be annoying... You can remove this ring with some effort if you must, so its not all that bad. It would be nice if they included an extra tip instead of the lanyard. Or offer two versions and let customers choose between a lanyard or an extra tip.

All in all this is a great product. Don't hesitate to buy it. This is going to be my go-to stylus for a very long time.
