5.0 out of 5 stars Decent speaker, sound even better in pairs. 7 June 2017
By Timothy J. Zulauf - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
I purchased two of these speakers for use with my Samsung 6 Series TV, model number UN55KU6290.
Unfortunately, I purchased my TV from a big-box retailer during a black friday promotion, so I got the one model that doesn't have Bluetooth, which is a little irritating, but it has WiFi, which provides a more reliable connection with this speakers anyways. I'll cover the TV pairing information down below.

As far as the R1 speakers go, I enjoy mine immensly. The space that I'm using them in is reasonably small, and they sound great. In conjunction with my TV and soundbar, it was a great way to set up an inexpensive system. I purchased one speaker used (perfect quality, got lucky) and the second one was an Amazon Warehouse deal, which meant it was a damaged or open box, but nothing wrong with the speaker. Great way to save money if you're not worried about the potential for a little scratch or two.

I used the Multiroom App with my R1s without issue. I personally think that app gets a bad rap, maybe people don't understand how to use it, or misunderstand how it's supposed to work, but I haven't had any major issues with it to date (on iPhone, anyways).

It's worth noting that if you're experiencing issues with the Bluetooth connection on your R1 speaker, to ensure that you do not have any interference that could be messing with the connection. Bluetooth can experience interference from wirelress home telephones, microwaves, certain WiFi frequencies, and of course, other Bluetooth devices. So many things have Bluetooth incorporated into them that it's very easy to forget about it, particularly light bulbs, thermostats and such. These items can all theoretically interfere with eachother. Generally, it's best to temporarily disable all other Bluetooth items or equipment that could potentially be causing interference, and then test the speaker. If it works, turn on the other equipment one piece at a time until you figure out which one happens to be the culprit. (Overall, if you have a good router and reliable/fast internet, you're better off using the WiFi connection, as it doesn't suffer from the quality deficiencies that plague Bluetooth).

I purchased two mounts for my speakers, VideoSecu One Pair Black Univaersal Satellite Speaker Mount Bracket for Wall and Ceiling, fits Keyhole and thread hole with 1/4 20 threads, 4mm and 5mm 1ST which works perfectly with the 1/4" mounting hole in the center of the base of this speaker. It's worth noting that if you choose to mount this speaker, you will lose some of your sound quality.

This speaker performs best when it's situated on a flat, solid surface, away from obstructions/objects for at least a couple of feet. The contraindiction to this is that placing it in a corner can provide a slight amplification/boost to the sound. It's usually a good idea to play something relatively steady out of the speaker and move it to different locations before settling on a final home for it.

In terms of pairing the speakers with my 6 series TV, my TV is one of the models that does not have Bluetooth, which also means it does not have SoundConnect; SoundConnect is a Samsung-proprietary technology that relies on Bluetooth. I was able to connect the two R1s that I purchased to my TV, but it took a little bit of a round trip to get there. You first need to connect the R1 speaker to your home WiFi using the Multiroom Application on your smart phone (it's available for Android/iPhone/iPad). Your TV must also be connected to the same WiFi network.
The mistake that I see people making the most frequently is that they try to select one R1 speaker as their output source for the TV, and complain that they can only select the one speaker. It's possible to use multiple R1s with the 6 series TV, you have to do it through a different menu option.
Under Advanced audio, there's a menu option that is typically grayed out, called "Multiroom Wireless Audio". When the R1 is connected to the same WiFi as the TV, this menu option will become available. Under this menu option, you can select any available speaker as your left/right/center channels. There's two primary options under "Multiroom Wireless Audio", one is "Surround Sound" and the other is "Surround+Soundbar".
Bear in mind, if you're pairing the TV to the wireless speakers using WiFi, the soundbar must also have WiFi, or you won't be able to access it from that menu.

For anyone considering getting an older model soundbar:
I purchased a wired soundbar (HW-J355), one of the last models that had a wired subwoofer. The 2016 model's subwoofer is bluetooth only and does not have any ports to make a wired connection, which was a huge deterrant for me in purchasing it, and the new Sound+ models are just way out of my price range. The older soundbars are -barely- compatible with the new speakers and equipment, if you're "ok" with the wireless subwoofer, the HW-K650 is a decent choice. With the HW-J355, you can use the R1 speakers as surround in conjunction with the soundbar, but the soundbar has to be connected using Digital Optical. The only downside to this setup is that the HW-J355 must be controlled with it's own remote, and the R1s can be controlled with the TV remote. You cannot pair the HW-J355 with the TV remote, like you can with the upper-tier models from that line.
I believe it may be possible to use a universal remote (logitech or such) for that purpose, but don't have the funds or inclination to find out right now.

(Btw, I had a support rep tell me that the only way I could control the soundbar and the R1s with the same remote was if the soundbar was connected using HDMI/ARC; There's converters that can convert HDMI/ARC from the smart tv to digital optical signal for the soundbar, which, I purchased one and found out the hard way that the rep was wrong. Not only could I not use the TV remote to control the soundbar, but when HDMI/ARC is selected, you can't get sound out of the R1s as surround sound, that only works with the Digital Optical.)

I'm happy with my Samsung products, though. I do believe that they make quality products, and I've gotten a lot of use out of all of mine. I'm a little more wary of third party sellers after a recent experience trying to purchase a used soundbar; sometimes it isn't worth saving a few bucks.
Their technical support is lacking, to say the least. Many of the technicians I've interacted with simply read to me from the very same manual that I downloaded from the Samsung product pages. Another told me "sure, I can mount the R1 upside down", despite the fact that it says in the manual that the speaker must not be mounted upside down or sideways. They tend to be unaware of features, very unware of potential compatbility issues between new and old products or the various different product lines. But I don't blame Samsung entirely for the deficiencies in their support; most of the people working their live chat have not physically touched/seen/used any of these products and are trained specifically to relay information from their Q&A database and the manuals.

Sometimes you can have decent results on the community forum, as long as you're not asking anything overly-technical. Generally the best support tends to come from third-party forums, places where AV enthusiasts/hobbyists hang out. Just remember, how you phrase your questions, how much detail your provide (model numbers, etc) tend to affect the quality of your results.
2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Bluetooth Range & Limitations From Samsung Multiroom App 13 June 2017
By Steph Boogie - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
The Bluetooth Range Is Very Disappointing:
My desk (where my speaker stands) and my dresser (where my phone sits while charging) are probably about 8 feet from each other. There shouldn't be a shoddy and choppy sound for 8 feet of distance. I have an actual bluetooth headset for my phone that gives me 35 feet of range so this is strange.

Amazon Music Has Limited Functionality:
I like to queue albums while streaming music because I desire nonstop music play. Because Amazon Music is intertwined with the Samsung Multiroom app, I cannot queue albums. It would be best if the Samsung app worked in the same fashion as the AM app and desktop site. Like Spotify, I'd prefer to select the Wi-Fi capable speaker device of my choice to play music. And then there's the limitation of Spotify on the Samsung Multiroom app...

Spotify Podcasts Cannot Play on the Speaker:
Why wasn't this functionality written in to the design of the speaker? Spotify offers more than music. Why is there a limitation for podcasts?

Love the concept and product. Connections can be challenging but that could have more to do with wifi problems then the speakers.
