Bought this to install it on my Lenovo Y700 laptop. Package promptly arrived the very next day and was in good condition. I installed it on my laptop and am now using it as my primary OS drive. Boot time speeds are now insanely fast. My laptop now boots in under 2 secs (including BIOS time).

475 GigaBytes are user available. Read Write speeds are astonishing. I have included screenshots below. Samsung claims 3500 MBps Seq Read and 2100 MBps Seq write. Real world speeds are quite close at ~3300 MBps Read and 1800 MBps Write.

Make sure your device has at least 4 PCIE 3.0 lanes to reach optimum speeds.

4.0 out of 5 stars The cure for computer rage. 13 January 2017
By Engr. Jay Mendoza - Published on Amazon.com

This review is for the Samsung 960 PRO - Series 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD.

TL;DR │ Most insane NVMe drive yet. Insanely fast, insanely expensive, for insane people.

- - - - -

I am one of those insane people. I have 512GB (2×256GB) 950 Pro in RAID 0 for my gaming build, a 512GB 950 Pro for my laptop, and now, a 512GB 960 Pro (for the same laptop). From my first tests (RAID mode), two 256GB 950 PRO in RAID 0 (512GB total) is on par with a single 512GB 960 Pro, with the RAID having minuscule edge on random writes. This test was done with IRST (Intel) drivers.

On my second tests, I used Samsung NVMe drivers, under AHCI mode in BIOS. It is evident how much faster the 960 PRO is compared to the 950 PRO.

I do use "regular" NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 drive from Intel (600p), and I use it only for a NAS build OS. For day to day, the difference is negligible, and I would still recommend getting those less expensive NVMe drives. (Just skip the SATA... and the hard drives.) These Samsung "PRO-series" drives are for people who just wants the best and who do not mind paying for them.

WHAT I LIKE │ + │
+ Looks good, not plain.
+ Sticker/heat spreader orientation not upside down anymore
+ Better thermals than the 950 Pro
+ Faster than a single 512GB 950 Pro

WHAT I DON'T LIKE │ × │
× Expensive.
× Packaging can use better protection.
× Other computers will seem slow, that you'd get rage from using them.
× It is also worth noting that it took a long time to deliver because of product delay.

PACKAGE │ ✓ ✗ │
✓ Box
✓ SSD on insecure plastic cradle
✓ Printed materials
✗ No freebies

For tests, I am putting this on an Alienware 13 R3, together with a 950 Pro. My machine has an i7-6700HQ, 32GB of usable RAM, and a discrete GPU. See photos for results. Both 512GB drives are tested in exactly the same configuration (cloned). The 2×256GB 950 PRO in RAID 0 is in a different machine.

UPDATE: The first tests were done in RAID mode, using Intel drivers. I reformatted both drives, and reconfigured BIOS to use AHCI mode. This made it possible to use Samsung drivers. I uploaded another benchmark comparison (excluding the RAID 0 drive).

- - - - -

VERDICT: I highly recommend this product for people who's okay with paying for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent. 23 January 2017

Edit: Got another one for my desktop 1TB model. 3000+ speed out of the box on MSI X99S Plus. Replacing stripe SSD raid.

Running on my 2016 HP Omen laptop at approximately 3000 read / 2000 write.
Not entirely sure why its not at advertised 3600, but I imagine its not the drive, and likely some system limitation.

No complaints, games, apps, OS - everything loads much faster now.

Advice: Never get laptops with anything but minimum SSD/Ram configuration - the SSD and Ram hardware that manufacturers usually put into their retail products are the cheapest models you can find. Its all about profit. You're getting cheated. Get the lowest available config then replace it with quality hardware like this drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trophy wife or PCIe SSD who needs one? 21 March 2017
By Acesfull - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
I had this drive installed in a Dell XPS. The Toshiba PCIe drive was fast about (1100mbs and ~600 on the write ) which is much faster than a mechanical and 2x faster than a SATA ssd. This drive is remarkable.... It's 3200mbs read and 2300write is blazing fast.

I have a SATA 850 EVO (read write ~500mbs) in my other computer. Boot times are similar. The real power comes when reading or transferring very large files. With very large files or gaming, it's worth every penny. Is it needed for most? No, but neither is a lifted truck, a Harley Davison, a beautiful home, or a spouse who looks stunning but doesn't talk. Do we all want them, yes! Do we "need" them, nope. Apply the same rules here. One thing is certain. It's a lot less expensive than a divorce! Yes, a little tongue and cheek, but you get the idea 🤣

5.0 out of 5 stars Upgraded from 950 Pro 7 February 2017
By Bryan - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
Phenomenal performance on all fronts. I am one of the very few that upgraded from a 512 950 Pro that is now going to my laptop. If I wasn't repurposing the 950 I would say it's not worth the upgrade but if you are in this situation it's worth the time to clone and swap. The real-world differnce is very slight to be sure. Most noticeable when copying large files or in video editing pulling clips or ever so slightly on app launches. Benchmark numbers are big if you are in to that. Note, it REQUIRES the new Samsung nvme driver from the website where the 950 pro took the default windows driver.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
3 drives were compared, all tested in the same Intel NUC: BOXNUC6i5SYK , this is the 6th Gen NUC running a 6th Gen i5. No other drives installed.

Tested each drive with Crystal Mark 5.2.1 x64, and Samsung's Magician Benchmarking tool on Win10Pro. Same RAM and same everything. Only difference is that Samsung does have its own drivers where WD relies on windows default. Samsung drivers were loaded then after a restart, tested.

Tested was a:

256 950 Pro (MZ-VKV256)
512 960 Pro (MZ-V6P512)
512 WD Black PCIe (WDS512G1X0C)

950 results:

RanW: 232871

WD Black Reults:
SeqR: 1800
SeqW: 820

Obviously the 960 Pro was the fastest with the 950 and the WD in somewhat the same ballpark. Although the 950 was faster than the WD. However it isn't a runaway and it is hard to tell how much of an impact the specialized drivers from Samsung helped performance. Either way, these are all very fast and are expensive compared to other non-PCIe NVMe drives.

The tools that go with the WD are very nice and more expansive compared to the Samsung. However, the WD tools software has lots of WD ads running accross it .. kinda annoying. Otherwise, nice dashboard.
