It is an excellent and objective history of Pakistan since its birth. The book traces the problem of Pakistan to the hatred towards India, and fear of India, which dominates all its decision, be they political, social, economic, or security related, including its Islamist and Jihad agenda. Unfortulately, this English version contains spelling and grammar errors.

When it comes to South Asia, Jaffrelot is a trusted hand. His meaty book is thoroughly researched and in conversation with a range of scholars researching Pakistan—the footnotes host Aqil Shah, Farzana Shaikh, and Ian Talbot among many others. Chronicling the history of Pakistan and the problems confronting the state today, Jaffrelot takes a microscopic look at Pakistani society—analysing the competing political parties, relations between various ethnicities and sub-ethnicities, and the convenient deployment of Islam to rally the masses—to identify fault lines. He asks if democracy really can take a pure form in a country where interests are narrowly defined by a select selfish few in the upper echelons of power. An ideal book for those hoping to get introduced to the formation of and fractures within the Pakistani nation-state.

This is an excellent and detailed book. However, the translation from the original French to English is indifferent and there are far too many spelling mistakes. The editors in a hurry to bring out the book have skimped on meticulous proof reading.

This is a reasonably good account of the history and present day reality of Pakistan. The book would have benefited a great deal from some analysis of the deleterious effects on Pakistani society of decades of being a subsidiary ally of the USA and the UK.
