Review

Lance Price has written the definitive account of the campaign that got Modi to where he is now. He tells a good story. Extensive interviews with key aides, interesting comparisons with powerful politicians he has worked with, and detailed chats with Modi himself have given Price's book an exciting immediacy. Price gives us a ringside view of Modi's way of working.

This book will help people around the world to understand more about Indian democracy and our campaign.

Price brings to the debate is the spin-doctor's perspective . . . He dissects Modi's strategic and tactical decisions, the social media interventions starting as far back as 2010, the advertising campaigns, the media coverage and the role of the three crucial 'ecosystems' that won Modi the election.

The Modi Effect is a highly readable book written in a racy and lucid style.

The book doesn't reveal too much for a person who has witnessed General Elections in 2014. For the fact, still can't believe that "Ab ki baar,Modi Sarkaar" slogan doesn't get single mention about the book of his campaign.

If you are absolutely alien to Indian politics then, this might dispense some good information to you, otherwise find suitable place to put your money.

In the 2014 election in India, Narendra Modi scored a big and decisive victory, some thing the nation did not see since the 1984 election of Rajiv Gandhi. For a curious political onlooker this is an interesting and extraordinary feat. How did he manage a victory of that size ? Given the fact that the electorate is extremely fragmented and the problems of one region are quite different from others how did he manage to connect across all the states ? In a party based electoral system with “first past the post” being the order of the day how did he manage to run a presidential style campaign? What was his strategy? Who were his backroom boys ? How did they work? How did he manage to tour the entire nation so many times? How did he use the technology to his benefit? Many questions aren’t they? For all reasons, the feat achieved by Modi in 2014 was an extraordinary one and it is something that many consider impossible.

Lance Price, British writer, journalist and political commentator, the man who worked as special adviser Tony Blair tries to answer all these questions in his book. “The Modi Effect: Inside Narendra Modi’s campaign to transform India”. He got the exclusive access to study the campaign and interview Modi and other BJP leaders for this book. He worked for a few months and came up with his analysis of the campaign.

Lance Price analyzes each aspect of Modi’s campaign. He speaks about the dedication of Modi, His use of technology, the teams that helped him, the way the campaign was designed, the way the ad's were designed, his core group, the other organizations that helped him etc.

Nice research and nice analysis , do read the book it gives great insights into the campaign that 'Modi'fied India.

I bought the Kindle ebook version a couple of days before the print edition was available on Amazon. Just like you, I was curious to understand how the hugely successfully campaign was carried out by Mr. Modi and the BJP for the 2014 general elections. This book definitely provides a lot of details, obtained from several quarters including party workers at different levels, organisers, ad agencies, TV, print and social media. However, the author was not able to meet with the master strategist Mr. Amith Shah for various reasons. Not that Mr. Shah would have provided much insight into his planning and execution, but we could have got his perspective.

While the entire book is narrated very well and kept me engaged for the most part, there is one incident where I believe the author could have looked elsewhere for information. This is regarding the 2002 Godhra roits. The author’s source of information are the NGO’s/human rights organizations. The issue here is, most of us know the NGO’s were merely there to promote the western interests by painting a negative picture of the Hindus and right wing organizations.

We have heard enough about Hillary Clinton’s “Get Modi” policy and the funding provided to several NGO’s , with the sole purpose of tarnishing Mr. Modi’s image and wrongly accusing him of state support to the riots. I believe the Nanavati commission report or Justice Tewatia Committee report would have served as a more credible source.

That said, overall it is a well written book and will give you a lot of insights into the election campaign.
