After just over a year of use, this product began to fall apart. The rubber surrounding the plastic started to break off in pieces. I thought I was going to have to spend another $100 bucks, but when I contacted LifeProof through their website, I was instructed to photograph the item on their return form. They responded quickly and said a replacement was sent. An very pleased with their customer support. I wish more companies would stand behind their products like this.

Since I'm reviewing the product, I should share some experiences with it. I like that the case only adds a about 1/4" to the iphone thickness, making it about 3/8". It's not bulky like some Otther products. I didn't test it in the water so can't tell you if it really is waterproof. I did drop it a few times while walking and viewed only a couple of minor scratches to the exterior. iPhone was never affected. I use headsets with the unit all the time. It works fine but it can be a bit annoying to have to unscrew the headphone jack plug all the time. Too bad no one has come out with a jack terminal design that keeps the unit waterproof without having to unscrew something to access the port. On the sound level affects, I find that I have to open the door to the charger port in order to hear the iphone better. I have bad hearing and cannot hear the higher frequencies with the door closed, and those frequencies are in the range of female voice, especially when consonants are spoken. So when my wife calls, it's always open or else I will hear the "I told you about it yesterday," lecture again. Last, no matter how clean and dry I prepared the iphone before installing the cover, I would always get that rainbow oily smear between the surfaces. This replacement cover doesn't have it after about 1-1/2 months of use. I hope they also fixed that rubber housing issue as well. Other than those issues, I wouldn't use my iphone without this case.
2.0 out of 5 stars Good Protection - Makes your Phone Unusable. 9 July 2013

The LifeProof cases are good protection. My brother uses his to video his kids swimming underwater in the pool. That said it is bulky. It muffles sound, both coming out of the phone's speakers (music) or when you are talking on the phone. People constantly are saying "I can't hear you" or that I sound like I am in a tunnel. In addition, I can't hear them when I am talking on the phone. If you use this case, a Bluetooth device for phone calls is a must, and perhaps a Bluetooth speaker system and car stereo.

In addition, you will constantly be trying to find chargers that fit it, and looking around for your headphone jack dongle so you can use it in the gym or to listen to music. LifeProof sells all of the dock adapters, headphone adapters, etc., at very premium prices. The headphone adapter was showing wires within a few months of use, and the little tiny screw in headphone jack cover is the bane of your existence if you have to screw and unscrew it to use your headphones and such. This is part of LifeProof's business model: to get you to buy all of the 'add-ons' to make your device useable with their case.

This is a case with good protection that makes your iPhone suck. It may be something to buy if you want waterproof use, even on a part-time basis. I am going to keep mine for when I'll be around water or snow skiing. The rest of the time I want something more minimalistic that actually allows you to use your phone (what a concept).

I did not buy this case to take it swimming, I got it for protection for my iPhone 4s. I was looking for a smaller package than the Otterbox Defender so I thought I would give this a try.

While the protection aspect seems to be good in a thinner package, the user interface is horrible.

* The buttons on the side for volume are very stiff.

* The silent switch on the side does not work at all. Same problem - too stiff.

* The most annoying problem is the screen protector. There is a gap between it and the phone screen so every time you tap it, you get a double hit - one on the protector and a second when you hit the screen. This is tolerable for navigating but is the pits when you are having to type.

* Like everyone else has stated, headphones and chargers are a real pain when you try to plug them in. The aftermarket products I have will not plug in at all.

In summary, I liked the size of this case and the protection it gives to my phone. Unfortunately the problems outweigh the positives for me to keep it. I would only recommend this case to someone who either wants to take their phone under water or has a significant risk of dropping their phone in the water. If you are looking for general protection from shock or occasional splashes, I recommend you get something else.

I bought this case for my wife because she is known in the cell phone world as the "destroyer". I had also ordered myself the cheaper OtterBox but, after I looking at the LifeProof I sent it back and got one like hers. I like that it fits so close and does not add much to the size of the phone.

I have used OtterBox cases for my phones for several years now. I really like them, but the rubber outside makes it difficulty to put in your pocket or into an aftermarket case. The LifeProof case is smooth on the outside, which is a definite plus, and is waterproof, another big plus to me.
