Product description

AirCurve play makes the speaker of your iPhone 10 decibels louder. No, really and it works without batteries or cables or power adapters or incantations. Just slip your iPhone into AirCurve's rubber dock gasket, and it becomes the perfectly portable audio/video conference phone and self-contained music and video player. Without revealing the secret of the magic, we can tell you that AirCurve is a cleverly engineered acoustic amplifier that collects the sound from the built-in speaker of your iPhone, amplifies it in a coiled waveguide, and projects it out into the room. AirCurve's transparent polycarbonate body lets you appreciate the waveguide's graceful curves, inside, that do all the work. That's some great-sounding mojo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as expected 22 June 2011

I recently ordered and received the Aircurve Play for the iphone 4. As others have stated, the phone fits loosely within the Aircurve unless placed in the provided white case or you have a case of similar thickness. The case I already have on my iphone fits well enough, so no need to switch cases, I can just drop it in the Aircurve and it works (I think most thin cases would probably fit well enough). The device certainly results in a noticeable increase in volume, though it would not really be audible during a party or after walking into other rooms of my house. It is loud enough that I clearly hear my iphone while using the shower. The sound quality is about what you'd expect from something that just amplifies your iphone speaker, slightly degraded from the normal iphone speaker. Due to the limited increase in volume and sound quality, it's not something I'd use while entertaining guests. My sole purpose for purchasing the product was to place it in the master bathroom so that I can listen to my iphone while getting ready in the morning (hear the speaker over running water), and for that it works perfectly. No cords or batteries to ever worry about either!

Depending on your intended use, this might be great or horrible. If you're an audiophile or intend to make this a primary listening device, you may be disappointed. If you just want something cheap and easy to slightly amplify your iphone speaker and don't want to deal with a cord or batteries, you could be very happy.
5.0 out of 5 stars new life for an old phone 8 November 2015

I'm so glad I bought this. I have an old iPhone 4s used solely for Audible audiobooks. It became my favorite listening device because it has decent storage, is small and very easy to use, and has a sleep timer. The sound quality is fine for audiobooks too, but the volume wasn't loud enough to use anywhere but the quietest situations. The Aircurve Play has changed all that, and allowed me to listen to books my old iPhone anywhere in the house and in slightly noisy conditions. I don't take the phone anywhere, so I can leave it permanently in the Aircurve. If you plan on taking your phone in and out of this all the time, you might want to factor that in.

The upgrade in volume made a big difference because my needs were in line with what this case delivers. Don't expect more than it can offer, and you'll be as pleased as I am. It won't be "loud" loud, as in entertaining a roomful of people or blasting through ambient noise. But it will give a distinctly welcome boost to an old phone if you want it for personal use. I have seldom paid so little for such a useful upgrade in individual enjoyment.

Embarrassing confession: I did have to ask for help figuring out how to pop the phone in the plastic case. It was so simple, I missed it entirely. Just line it up and push down carefully: it will fit. If you have any doubts, just email the company like I did. The people who run it have that quaint old-fashioned concept of excellent customer service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked projection and case friendly. 31 May 2012

I had been quite hesitant about pulling the trigger on this one; I've been perusing the net for a viable option for projecting music without the need of a power source; and I found it here, plus if you remove the white polycarbonate insert that comes in the phone bay you can keep your case on the phone (depends on the thickness of the case though). Incipio iPhone 4/4S SILICRYLIC Hard Shell Case with Silicone Core - 1 Pack - Carrying Case - Retail Packaging - Black/Black That's the very case that I've been using on my 4, since I bought it back on December 2nd, 2010 (the case), regardless though the stereo output aligns perfectly with the receiver of the AirCurve. Additionally since I use my phone as my alarm clock, I've got the back stand set at the proper angle to meet the acoustic layout of my bedroom; and since I've got it laying out in it's panoramic viewing mode, I can charge my phone simultaneously. As for any potential tinnyness, well that's not surprising, with only one speaker giving output you'll lose some bass (but not much), since there aren't many hard angles which would reduce sound quality though it does project the remaining bass and treble quite impressively.

I decided on this mostly for use at smoke-outs, and alarm projection.

I needed something to help me hear people while I'm talking with them in the car. My previous car was great in that it had a bluetooth stereo built into it. However, the car I drive now does not have that luxury. Not only that, my current car is not as airtight as my previous car. So, there is a lot of noise interference which makes it difficult to hear people when I have my phone on speakerphone. So, I bought this AirCurve, and I can hear people clearly above the noise.

Now, I could have purchased the car version of this, but I actually wanted to use this in the house for when I'm in the shower and getting ready for work or church. What that means is that I don't need to have an amplifier in each room or have to bobble my "portable" speakers from room to room. Does this really matter? No. I'm not so lazy that I can't carry a couple small speakers. However, some mornings, I need to be more efficient than other mornings. So, I just don't listen to music or books on those mornings. This is smaller than a 300 page book, and just as easy to carry around. This gives me the best of both worlds... efficiency with life in sound.

Well... if you're like me, you love bass. This does not have a good bass sound like my surround sound stereo. However, neither does the built-in speaker on my iPhone. So, if you're wanting something that has thumping bass, this is not the product you want to purchase. Still, this $20 device amplifies the sound better than my $40 computer speakers I had in the kitchen and much, much better roommate's $125 clock radio with iPhone dock... no exaggeration!

This device is rated to amplify sound by 10db. Sound is doubled every 3db. My decibel meter is an app on my phone. So, I can't tell you the accuracy of that rating. However, I can tell you that my "audible perception" is that it increased the volume coming out of my iPhone speaker by at least 3 times.

5.0 out of 5 stars aircurve play for iphone 4 and 4s 19 November 2011

Good product that works as intended. I use it to listen to video on youtube or news apps and it works very well by amplifying the sound considerably. It gets a little distorted if you use it with the speakerphone on the iphone when making or receiving calls, but if I reduce the volume on my phone, this clears things up nicely. Very sturdy design that seems well made, although I suspect the adjustable metal bar that holds the device either vertically or horizontally will in time become loose(but since it's relatively inexpensive)this is not of great concern to me. I was actually so happy with this product that I purchased another one for my father who has an iphone 4S. I gave this product 4 out of 5 stars as I thought it was missing one thing that was not included: The plastic is a little too slippery for my tastes, especially with an expensive phone sitting in it; I stuck on round, clear rubber stops that I affixed to the bottom and the longer side so that the aircurve will no longer slide on any surface when used either vertically or horizontally, for peace of mind.

August 2013---both of my aircurve play's are still operational and functioning well; the adjustable metal bar that I feared would not last, works great on both of my aircurves and I use these on a daily basis with one at home and another in my travel bag, which is just thrown in there with the rest of my items. Top notch quality, would not hesitate to buy again or recommend this product to others! Bumped up review from 4 to 5 stars...
