  • Foldable 4 leaf barn door Kit
  • Included Grids and Color Gel
  • Adjustable Reflector Mount from 5.5 -7 inches
  • 24 Month Manufacture Warranty

Product description

"The Universal Barndoor Kit comes with a grid and three color gels within metal frames. Barndoor devices alter the shape amount or color of the light output from the flash heads. The universal barndoor fits a reflector diameter of 6.5 -8 and also has a built-in holder for metal and color gels. Using a barndoor set attached to the front of the reflector of your light source will allow you to control the light cast on a subject. The more leaves on a barndoor set and the longer the leaves are the more the light beam may be specifically controlled. Positioning of the leaves will determine the size of the light shaft. Rotating the leaves will determine the angle of the shaft of light. A 4-leaf barndoor provides more light control than a 2-leaf barndoor set. Three Color Gels + Grid: Blue - Casts a cold effect on subjectRed - Casts a warm effect on subjectYellow - Can be used to create a mood or warming effectGrid - Metal grid with a 5-degree tilt"

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent (read on for a definitive review) 2 March 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Disclaimer: not a short review. I'll be uploading some photos to go with the product photo above

Prior to buying this, as a charter member of Team Cheap and dedicated DIY-er, I sat through several YouTube presentations of home-made barndoors.

But, if your time is worth anything, buy these barn doors rather than trying to make your own.

These function just fine. They are an excellent deal for the money. Most reviewers state the same thing (see last paragraph, below, to find other reviews).

The rest of my review just lists things I wanted to know prior to purchase.

What you get: A white cardboard box containing 2 poly bags: (1) barndoor assembly, (2) honeycomb and 3 filters.
NO storage box or pouch

Since most of Amazon's many listings for this product don't give correct dimensions and weight:

Country of origin: China
Size of package: 9 x 9 x 1-5/8 in.
Shipping weight: 2 lb 6 oz (approx)
Weight of barndoors alone: 1 lb 6 oz (approx)
Addl weight for grid: 4.5 oz (approx)
Addl weight per gel: 1.825 oz
Material: all metal - steel? (Gels could well be polyester - no way for me to test; gel frame is metal)
Actual size of overall barndoor assembly: 9 H x 8-1/4 W x 1-1/4 D in. (8-1/4 x 8-1/4 x 7/8 in. not counting thumbscrews)
Size of rectangular doors (Top & Bot): 4-3/4 x 7-1/4 in.
Size of trapezoidal doors (L & R): 4-3/4 x (7-1/4 tapering to 4-3/4) in.
Dia. of opening: 6 in.
Max. dia. of lamp reflector: 7 in.

The filters definitely cut down on the strength of the light. The blue, red and yellow filters are transparent but not crystal clear. The 4th filter is a diffuser, a bit of neutral density-ness.

These barndoors DO fit on a cheap 8 in. reflector clamp light (you know, those super-cheap, round aluminum reflector, hardware store work lights). This is my application - I'm using them in continuous, not flash, lighting for painting set-ups. The fit is a real stretch - the bottom spring has to be taken out of its catch & the thumbscrew and spring mounting points are a little stressed.

They are heavy. I'm going to have to cobble up a mount for my cheapo light so that the clamp ties in at the balance point (way forward of where it is on the standard lamp).

Measured angle of light from honeycomb grid: 45 deg. (significant light falloff after 30-35 deg.)

The core plate of the barndoor is sheet metal formed over a hefty wire frame. The wire not only stiffens the core but also acts as axles for swiveling the barn doors.

The 2 swivel clamps between each door and the wire frame consist of 2 plates, not a single strap bent over the wire. That's a plus: If years of door adjustments cause these to loosen up, you can easily remove and bend these plates to bear more heavily on the wire frame. Or, you could just loosen the screws, put a friction element between the plates and the wire... such as a small piece cut from a milk bottle... and tighten the screws back down.

Secure mounting requires a lip on the reflector. The wire spring at the bottom and the acorn-nut ends of the thumb screws need to hook over a raised area. Most reflectors, at least most metal ones, have a rolled lip for stiffening.

One reviewer notes that a thumb screw had broken off. The welded-on mounting brackets might well be a weak point. This is why epoxy was invented.

There are currently at least 20 listings at Amazon for this product... same product. Most of these 20+ are the same thing called out for a different brand of lighting system (Bogen, Alienbees, etc.). Some of these have additional reviews you might want to read.

For listings that contain reviews: Search All Products... put the following ASIN numbers (one by one) in the search box: B0054EJ4KY and B0054EJ48G - same product. Also, reviews for same product w/more colored gels and higher price: B004RYM2HE. Probably not the same product but very similar (gels affixed via magnets according to reviewer): B001AG63SQ

BTW, if you're going by price, as I usually do, there is a similar set with a smaller diameter and lower price. Be aware that, if the gels have standoff legs rather than being simple flat plates, you're very likely looking at the smaller barndoor, around 4-6 in. in dia.
2.0 out of 5 stars Okay option for informal, occasional shoots 6 March 2017

Heavy metal doors appear to be of good construction but there is a lot of light leak between your colored gels and the housing. If you're looking for a low-cost option, you'll likely not be disappointed. If you're setting up a higher end studio, pay a little more for something better.
5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed! 24 December 2015

Works very well on my Neewer studio strobes with reflectors (sold separately by another vendor.)
These are made to attach to the outer edge of the reflector, not to the light itself. Once you have attached it properly with the adjustable screws, you can dismount / remount using a quick-release lever. All metal construction for great durability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value 20 September 2014

I was surprised with the quality for the price. The grid itself seems to be of higher quality than the PCB grids I ordered with my Einsteins.

The barn doors are also surprisingly high quality. They seem to be rigid enough to hold in place, and easy to adjust.

My one complaint is that its painted gloss black vs matte. This allows a little bit of reflected spill that would be avoided with a less reflective paint. All in all they're still a great value and something im glad I have in my light case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great item for the money! 14 August 2015

For the money, it's a super item! Use it with my Alien Bee strobe. Added a couple pics to see how it works... Has two screws for adjustment of size of the reflector cone. Has a wire the overlaps the edge and lock it in place on the other side.
