I bought this for my iPhone 4S, wanting something with a kickstand and that was protective but not too bulky. Once received, I really liked the overall look and feel of this case, and loved the built in stand.
Protection: I think the combination of cushioning and hard back will be good for me...I don't particularly drop it often, but my 4 & 7 year old handle it all the time so I want a little extra protection against knocks and bumps vs. the slim snap on case I had been using. The combo of hard back and textured cushioned edges feels fine in the hand and the edges provide good grip in the hands, but not so much that it will be more than occasional annoyance if carrying in a tight pocket.
Size/Fit:it is a little bit thicker from back to front that I would like but that is not a dealbreaker for me-plus I realize having the kickstand fold compeltely flush into the back means it needs room to do that. The length and width it adds a little bit but not excessive-of course more than my old slim case but nothing like an otterbox or something. The fit is good overall, plenty of room for the camera so no issues there, there is just a little give on the sides and bottom edges where it meets the case but the material is stiff enough I do not think it will stretch out over time like TPU cases. I was pleased that it fit over my existing anti-glare screen protector, no edge peeling issues or anything. It was easy to install, pretty hard to get off though, but I rarely take it off so not a big deal for me. If you regularly dock your phone you may want to explore other possibilties, as it is tough to get off and may not fit as tightly after muliple removals.
Openings: The charging port only works on 3 of the 5 cables/chargers we have. All are OEM that came with the the phone or were purchased at AT&T store. One car and one sync cable does not fit in the port opening-they are too wide top to bottom and can't go far enough in the hole. I think these may be the oldest ones I have of these that were bought last year with my iPhone 4. This year we upgraded my husband to the 4s (and then traded phones so I got the new one...he didn't even notice the difference compared to his old non-smartphone!) and the cables we got at that time all fit. I think the connector is just a little thinner on the newer versions I guess. So if you have an older cable and can't get it to work, try a newer version-I originally posted a negative review due to this but since discovered it was only some of my cables not working and am editing! Other openings-flipping the sound off and on requires my fingernail to fit the port as does opening the kickstand, so that may be a little hard if you have very short nails or heavier fingers. The volume buttons & power button function perfectly. I don't ever use headphones so can't say whether the port on that works.
Kickstand-it is just plastic, so I don't know if it will hold up to a lot of use-but it is fairly firm and not brittle, so I also don't see it snapping easily, I would worry more about it eventually coming loose from the case. It folds out easily by slipping a fingernail under the edge, and can be set at two different viewing angles, and it WILL hold the phone both horizontally and vertically (I wasn't sure based on the pictures). It's a little hard to snap back in...you almost have to very gently flex it to 'tuck' it back into the catch. The good thing about this is I don't worry that it will ever open unless I want it too. It does fold completely flush into the back of the case which is great as well.
The only actual complaint I have is that both on here and on the case-mate website this color (raspberry), looks more of a purpleish berryish color than it is, even viewed on two different monitors and on my phone. In person it is firmly on the pink side. It's not my favorite but I can live it with, and doesn't affect the function or protection of the case, so oh well. Also the black is glossy, not matte, so it picks up fingerprints badly, but still I can live with it as that is outweighed by the postive features. I'm not reducing my rating because of that.
To my delight, it was exactly what I wanted. I wanted a phone that had the volume/power buttons protected, a front bezel (ok to put the phone face down) and great protection. THIS WAS IT! It even has a built in kickstand! Too cute!!!
I got my case and instantly threw my other case away, and I've been in love ever since.
I only have a couple of comments on it:
1). I was sent the WRONG color. The picture shows a pink "body" with black trim, I received the exact opposite black "body", pink trim. I didn't notice until I started this review, but apparently it's not a huge issue.
2). The plastic part of the case is VERY fingerprint friendly. Fortunately, it's in black, so it's not that noticeable.
3). The case is very thick. It's not as big as some cases (Otterbox), but it is slightly huge. I haven't had an issue with headphones or plugging in my charger, but be warned: you will have issues with sound docks and other stands. I would suggest purchasing a dock extender (well worth it). Another issue with the thick case is that it's become uncomfortable to me. Maybe someone with bigger hands would find it comfortable. It cuts into my palm when I'm gripping it.
Although I've listed my 3 gripes, this case still gets 5 stars. I have a 23 month old who LOVES playing on Mommy's phone and has thrown in in frustration because she can't get "Angry Burrd" to hit the pigs. Lucky for me, my PHONE and MY CASE were not hurt at any time. I will always take protection over cosmetic appearance.
FYI: If anyone is looking for the same type of protection with a thinner profile, I would suggest the Casemate POP Case without the Kickstand. I really had no need for the kickstand, but it's a nice little addition. I just ordered my new POP Case (NO KICKSTAND) and will review that one. Hopefully that one works on my dock or my desk charger.
Thank you Casemate!!!!!
The case has been dropped maybe twice and my phone is perfectly fine. Protection gets an A+++
I've also had to replace a couple of screen protectors because of bubbles and other things, so the case has had to come off a couple of times. I guess I've taken it off one time too many: I now have a gap on the left hand corner of my phone. Not huge but it is noticeable.
^^This is no fault of CaseMate... I believe I'm taking the case off incorrectly. I'm "peeling" it off from the top. Oh well...
Overall, I still think it's a wonderful case and I will def buy it all over again if I need to.
This is Seth's wife, so, yes, a woman bought pink and black :)
