2.0 out of 5 stars PROMISES, PROMISES, PROMISES, UNREALIZED EXPECTATIONS AND FAILS TO DELIVER!!! 25 February 2015

This is NOT the first time I have bought a portable tuner (read my review on epinions
/review/sony-srfm37w-digital-tuning-portable-am-fm-stereo-radio-tripod/content_208611020420
regarding one of my reviews for an earlier product.

This product APPEARED to have basically decent features on paper, BUT...

I have a HD-Radio JVC car stereo and like it a lot, so this was my influence and the fact that more stations are available in this area with HD-Radio than without was the other factor. With that stated, I STILL enjoy the steadfast reliability of the Sony unit (although HATED when the earlier Sony model's TV reception was no longer functional due to Digital the over the air broadcast change).

At one time I was a tester for various telecom and network corps., and etc... alpha, beta, release, post-release, etc.

This should give a basic background.

When I received the radio, I was pleased by it's overall looks and feel. The buttons were pretty solid, and laid out decently.

I programmed it for the stations available in my area.

Reception widely varied.
Using the radio's included earbuds provided better reception but lower quality listening.
Using my regular earbuds resulted in better quality listening but fewer stations locked into and generally a lower level of connection quality.

A lot of this is due to the fact that most QUALITY/MODERN earbuds and earphones utilize SHIELDED CABLES in their construction... all of these kinds of radios utilize the earbuds/earphones cabling for the FM antenna, and shielding makes the cabling worst kind of antenna... the earbud's included do not have much shielding and utilize a different wire for left and a different wire for right speakers, so the included earbud's are better at being used as the FM antenna. Which frankly SUCKS!

With all the newer tech for micro-antennas out there, you would ASSUME that these radios would benefit like cellphones have benefited, but this would be an unrealized expectation!
OR even an antenna dongle!
OR even a pull-out antenna!
But no, and this is a FATAL FLAW by the manufacturer, this non-sense of relying on the earbud's/headphone's for a functional antenna is severely OUTDATED and NO LONGER USABLE with quality/modern earbud's/headphone's using cabling which is heavily shielded!!!

So in general sitting still you get a decent signal with lower quality earbud's/headphone's at the expense of sound quality out of inferior quality earbud's!
Sometimes though you can be sitting still and the radio just cuts in and out trying to maintain signal strength.

Next, I took the bus to try it out around town. Not long after getting aboard the bus the radio was bouncing from HD-Radio quality to standard Stereo quality to even lower quality, and sometimes cutting out entirely.

I HATE it when manufacturer's release a product which promises some pretty basic functionality and then do not properly test them out in the real world BEFORE RELEASING THEM!!!

I do NOT like the FACT that there is ZERO AM tuning function AT ALL, nor do I like the fact that the battery is non-replacable, I quite often need to play my music for long terms away from charging, so using the newer Hybrid NiMH AAA or AA batteries or even the AA sized swappable rechargable batteries is MUCH BETTER!

I would not mind assisting some manufacturer to put out what this unit PROMISES AND ABSOLUTELY FAILS TO DELIVER!!!

Because of designs being pretty my IDENTICAL I would STRONGLY SUSPECT that Insignia's radio is also the same, as the buttons and shape are pretty much IDENTICAL.

RECOMMENDATIONS - SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! I SENT MY UNIT BACK FOR A REFUND!!!

and returned to using my tried and true Sony, without the HD-Radio but

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, Small HD Radio Unit 25 March 2015

I bought this as a gift for a friend who uses it running and at the gym. She loves it! The sound quality is terrific, HD radio (in our market at least) is way better in terms of programming and sound quality than regular FM, and many channels don't have commercials. The unit is small, seems reasonably well built, and has easy to use controls. If I could take a half star off I would for the USB recharging connector, which is the older fragile kind that is not used anymore.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the money I would highly recommend this HD Walkman 26 December 2016

For the money I would highly recommend this HD Walkman. Works much better outside than inside. I bought 3 and compared them to each other. Two of them performed better than the last one. The selectivity and sensitivity was pretty good for such a small unit. It would be better with a Bluetooth output. It has tuning capabilities for different countries. Do not do a factory reset in the menu options as I lost all sensitivity. There is a pin hole to do a hard reset and this resolved the issue. It would work great for someone wanting HD in their car without replacing the radio (using an FM transmitter) or a rental car.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great HD Pocket Radio 15 March 2017

Great radio. We have two HD stations here, which I listen to when I like my
bicycle. The sound is excellent, and the volume is adequate. Locks on to very
weak signals extremely well. Does not have bass boost or tone controls.
I would certainly highly recommend this to everyone, especially for outdoors when
hiking, walking or riding a bicycle. Let me know if you have any questions.
3.0 out of 5 stars OK with a strong signal. Single function device in an era of Smartphones and Pandora 14 September 2014

There is an HD-radio station in Sacramento, California, that I absolutely love. I like the music so much I even bought an HD-Radio tuner for home. I wanted to be able to listen to the same station at work, so I bought one of these. I wound up returning it, and here's why:

1. Receiver sensitivity - If you are really close to stations, I am sure it's fine, but it lacked enough sensitivity to reliably receive my station, even when outside. By contrast, my car HD Radio consistently receives the station in the same area.

2. Design - Not intuitive to use. Programming favorites is somewhat cumbersome. In addition, I think the days of single-purpose devices like this are pretty much over. I noticed that there is another HD-Radio product that attaches to iPods and iPhones. This seems like a better model to pursue when everyone has a smartphone and Pandora, etc.

In summary, I returned it because it did not work at all at my desk at work and its utility as an outdoor receiver was too limited.
