I was a voracious reader in my younger days!
For the past few years I had stopped reading books and instead spent more leisure time on browsing the internet and on playing around with the mobile. I wanted to rekindle (pun intended!) my interest in books reading again. So bought this expensive gadget.

It will be used by our family of four so the cost was a bit justified.
Also we plan to read a lot of free books (old classics) so I ultimately will recover the cost!

I have never seen an e-ink reader before and my first impression was not good.
After using my hi-resolution and big-screen mobile this had no color and the screen flashed when it was updated.
But then after using it for more than a week, for pure reading many hours a day, this is unbeatable!

The glow-light in this model is a necessity for me since I often read in the dark without disturbing others. The display is excellent however in bright light without the use of the built-in light.

The battery life came to only 5 days on my first full charge, but then we used it insanely for the first few days!

The experimental browser is unusable, but it is not meant to be used in an e-ink reader.

It mounts under Ubuntu-Linux, which was a life saver for me!

I use my existing mobile-charger, so the lack of one is not a problem.
(It charged from empty to full in under 2 hours and 45 minutes).
The included USB cable is very long, very important since I can read this while charging easily.

Conclusion: An expensive gadget meant for only extreme readers.

A friend had gifted a 2nd Generation Kindle to me a few years ago - I found it useful, but highlighting, making notes and all was cumbersome. I found the Kindle on iPad a distinct improvement, especially for highlighting, bigger screen and so on. However, an iPad is really heavy for prolonged use, so I found that reading long books on it was very tiring.

I ordered Kindle Paperwhite in March, and it came dot on time, beautifully packed. Amazon organised the customs clearance, so it was not a hassle for me. Setting up was easy. I had ordered a Kindle cover also, which seems to have been a good idea - it makes it easier to hold and use the Kindle securely. I have now been using Kindle Paperwhite for nearly a month, in preference over the iPad and the 2nd Gen. The screen is good, though a little slow to refresh when turning pages or moving back and forth in the book. The touchscreen is fairly responsive, though not as smooth as iPad screen. I also miss the multi-colour highlighting on the iPad. The touch keyboard is better than the pearl-button keyboard on 2nd Gen, but not as good as iPad. As a result, making detailed notes is a bit of a strain, though highlighting is okay.

That said, the Kindle Paperwhite is much easier to use for reading books, than for instance the iPad. Firstly it is just the right size and weight for you to hold with one hand. It really feels like you are holding a book. Second, you don't need to keep the room lights on to read at night. The screen does look like paper (and has a similar texture too!). The lighting is even, though you can glimpse the LEDs at the bottom showing through like footlights on a stage. You can increase the decrease the lighting and the font size - you can also change the font itself and the margins.

I've tried a lot of ebook readers, and the NEW Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi is the best ever.

I have read books on my phone, on my tablet and I have owned 4 different Kindles, but this is the very best there is.

My first generation Paperwhite is identical - I can't really tell the difference - but I gave that to my mum, so I needed a new one.

While I waited over a whole month for Amazon to deliver (my friend in Paris ordered hers on the same day as I ordered mine and Amazon France delivered hers in 2 days) I was using my Kindle Touch 3G, but I really missed the Paperwhite because it is such an amazing reading experience in all lighting conditions from bright sunshine to pitch dark. At night I read in bed and when I'm ready to sleep I don't need to get up and switch off a light - the Paperwhite goes to sleep too!

3G on a Kindle is a waste of time and money if you have access to wi-fi. It doesn't seem do anything apart from allow you to purchase from the Amazon store.

I strongly recommend that you buy the genuine Kindle case for the Paperwhite because it makes the reading experience so much more gorgeous. It fits like a glove, and automatically switches the Kindle on and off when you open or close the cover. Amazon didn't have these in stock - I know it's remarkable that Amazon didn't have stock of the Amazon Kindle cover, but I bought it from Chroma (who delivered in 2 days as opposed to Amazon's 1 month!).

I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys reading and cares about the environment - read just 30 books on your Kindle and then you're dramatically reducing your carbon footprint and saving trees!

Huge improvement on the old model! I own a basic Kindle, which serves the purpose, and is about 40 grams lighter, but the dpi on the new Kindle, the touch interface, the features including X-ray, the improved dictionary, wikipedia lookup, not to mention the fact that it is backlit and that there was a discount going plus additional cash back on offer ... it was like Don Corleone had condescended to run the local vada pao stall on a cold, rainy evening, if you get the drift! I did weigh this against the Voyage, and of course the Voyage is clearly a superior product, but it's early days yet and the cost - benefit just doesn't cut it for me at my budget. I mean - to have to pay more than double for "pagepress", marginally better resolution and 20 grams off the bulk! Or let's just say that the grapes are sour and at the moment, I feel about the Voyage like I felt about the Paperwhite when I bought my first Kindle. But hey, what can you do about 'em marketing guys! Sooner or later, they'll make me an offer I cannot refuse. It's not personal, it's business!
